Love is a Many Stupid Thing
Hong Kong 2004
Directed by Wong Jing.

Under the generic and misleading title lies a very funny send-up of INFERNAL AFFAIRS, courtesy of schlockmeister Wong Jing. In his typical fashion, the title (and trailer) basically try to mislead audiences into thinking the movie is a remake of his 1987 comedy THE ROMANCING STAR, starring Chow Yun-Fat. It's something of a mystery why he thinks he has to trick people into coming to see his films, because fans of Zucker/Abrams type movies (HOT SHOTS, NAKED GUN, etc.) will find much to enjoy here. Chapman To plays the Tony Leung role of the cadet who is sent undercover, he's joined by Shawn Yue and Lam Tze Chung. Meanwhile Raymond Wong plays the Andy Lau character of the gangster sent to join the police. Eric Tsang reprises his role from the original film as the triad boss, while Nat Chan admirably fills in Anthony Wong's shoes. From there, the parody is often quite inspired, and where it lags, Wong Jing throws bucketfuls of bikini clad babes to run about and bear the brunt of a variety of tit jokes, bringing us a wet t-shirt clad Belinda Hamnett, a corset-wearing Teresa Mak, and the new girl band 2R (Race and rosanne) are there as well for the younger crowd, for the more mature, there's Candice Yu. This movie is funny, crude, and unrepentantly silly, with Wong Jing presiding over all like a modern-day Lord of Misrule.
