New Option
Hong Kong 2002
Directed by Gordon Chan.

Shawn Yue stars as a police investigator who wants to join the SDU to become a sniper. He also has lots and lots of guns in his apartment. Michael Wong is the head of SDU and has final say who becomes an SDU member and who doesn't. Meanwhile, a group of criminals led by Patrick Tam are planning a massive heist and taunting the SDU as well. Much of the early part of the film involves SDU training, that latter divided between CID investigation of the bad guys and the final SDU attempt to take them down. It's at the end that this film really caught my attention -- the final battle becomes nothing short of urban warfare, house to house, with echoes of the Iraq war and conflict in Basra. The battle in NEW OPTION is tactical and fairly convincing, elevating the picture as a whole up a notch in spite of many plot holes and the villains scheme making absolutely no sense. Shawn Yue and Michael Wong both fit their roles well and deliver fine performances.
