Secret Pursuit, The
Hong Kong 2004

Qiandao Lake. Xiuxiu's brother is killed by gangsters, his last words, "Yellow Ribbon." Meanwhile Mailong (Peter Ho Yun-tung) is a photographer working for Jimi (Tiffany Lee)'s Bridal Shop. He feels an ominous conspiracy creeping all around him. A sense of doom, of menace. Sadly, this only manifests itself though a couple prank phone calls. He is on the edge when suddenly, he gets ding-dong ditched. The horror! After an interminable flashback, our protagonists discover what viewers have understood for a long time -- the entire story is completely pointless. What is the "yellow ribbon?" His sled? His motorcycle? Or that old song, by (we are helpfully told in the subtitles) "a Negro singer." I was hoping Tiffany Lee was getting better as an actress, but apparently not. On the other hand, this movie is typical of Peter Ho, and somehow even manages to be worse -- much worse -- than his dreadful 2001 effort Dark War.
