Star Runner
Hong Kong 2003
Directed by Daniel Lee.

Vanness Wu is training to challenge the top all around fighter, Tank (Andy On), and in the meantime is falling for his Korean university teacher, played by Kim Yun-Joo. He studies Thai kickboxing under veterans Chin Kar-Lok and Gordon Liu, and when that doesn't pan out, studies Chinese kung-fu with Max Mok and Ti Lung(!). David Chiang also appears in flashback as his grandfather. It's a Shaw Brothers old school reunion of sorts that helps satisfy the viewer, which is helpful since the romance angle is entirely unsatisfying and way too drawn out. Max Mok steals the show as the drunken, out of work Chinese Boxer who chews up the scenery as he violently trains Vanness Wu to the breaking point and beyond. Chin Kar-Lok has a good well choreographed fight in the tournament, too (he was also the action director). Vanness Wu (of the band F4) is entirely satisfactory and shows some promise if he is willing to work on his acting chops.
