Untold Story: Sudden Vanished
Hong Kong 2002
Directed by Ho Chi Hang.

Wayne Lai gets his own little digital video franchise, 'UNTOLD STORY.' It has nothing to do with the famous Herman Yau UNTOLD STORY films. Instead, it's basically the X-FILES. Wayne Lai and Fannie Yuan are cops who resign from the force to start their own detective agency to investigate crimes involving the paranormal. They get independent funding from the enigmatic cigarette-smoking man, who wears head to toe black leather and sunglasses, as played by Michael Tao. Their first case: disappearing girls and cult suicide. The plot sags horribly in parts but it's quite entertaining and the series shows more promise than any other DV production this year. Wayne Lai puts in a good performance as the constantly drinking detective on the case, while the story itself is packed with all kinds of ridiculous details, like a Mayan cult that worships Satan. Nostradamus fits in there, somewhere, I'm sure. Whether it is Satan, the Maya, or just some disgruntled ex-pat, Wayne Lai gets to the bottom of matters and I am looking forward to seeing more in the series.
