10 Tips for playing 1893: A World's Fair Mystery

1893: AWFM is huge. No, really, it is a gigantic, sprawling game. And while it can be great fun just to wander about the grounds, solving the mystery requires some careful planning. Here are my top 10 tips for playing 1893: AWFM:

1. Read the instruction manual and the Visitor's Guide before playing. The former will help you understand how to interact with 1893: AWFM, and the latter will provide an overview of the Fair itself. Pay careful attention to the "recommendations to the visitor."

2. When the game begins, read the Case Dossier thoroughly. Note where the crime took place. Also keep the poem with you at all times, it will be your "key" to solving the game.

3. Visit the crime scene. You may get some clues there. But, the crime scene will not suggest where to go next. Just look around, and take notes.

4. Take the tour on your first day, if possible -- it leaves at 11:00 from outside the Administration Building and provides a nice in-game overview of the main area of the Fair.

5. You have seven days in 1893: AWFM to complete the game. Get into an early morning routine and stick with it each day. First, talk to Carl -- grill him on everything you can think of. Show him any clues you have discovered. Show him items in your case dossier to get his opinion on those. Next, drop by the telegraph office to see if you have received any telegrams. Next, pick up the days newspaper. Finally, get in line at the bank to cash your bank draft. Read the newspaper while in line and note if the paper describes any interesting events scheduled for the day. The newspaper may also provide clues to solving the crime.

6. Visit the Fair in sections. Visit one building at a time and thoroughly explore that building. Look at all the exhibits, collect any items that you can, and compare the exhibits with the poetry that the criminal left at the scene, and see if there is a possible connection. Draw a map if you like, or at least note any interesting areas that appear they may be puzzles to return to at a later date. On your first day at the Fair, then, you might visit the Mines and Mining Building, Electricity Building, and Machinery Building, and explore them thoroughly.

7. When you meet people, ask them about themselves, ask about anything interesting they say, and ask them about the case. Show the pictures of Greenback Bob and Delbras around, you never know if anyone has seen anything.

8. Your office makes a good "holding tank", not just for putting diamonds in the safe, but for all the items that you find. When you find you are carrying too many things, do not just drop them where you are unless you have to, otherwise it becomes increasingly difficult to remember where you left them. Collect them and pile in your office, instead.

9. There are many timed events in 1893. When you come across a sign, person, or event that takes place at a certain time, note where and when it takes place immediately. Some events happen daily, but some happen only once, and if you miss it, you miss it.

10. Save early and often. Don't overwrite your save games, keep at least one for each day at the Fair, in case you'll want to go back and start at that position again. Save before doing things that might be dangerous, such as facing down an angry bull or jumping off a building in to a hot air balloon. Don't be afraid to try crazy things! Just make sure you Save, first.

Those are my top 10 tips. If you have any more, feel free to add them below!
